How Can insomnia Along With Anxiety Be Treated?

II wasn t sleeping for two days last month, so my doctor prescribed Ambien 5mg. Now, my 30 day supply of Ambien is gone, and now I find it almost impossible to sleep, that it has given extreme anxiety. I have not slept a day and a half, but I am not sure if it is rebound insomnia? Should I go to the ER? I am afraid of never being able to sleep again.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi there. I can understand that it causes you great concern if you can not sleep.
Did the doctor do an evaluation and maybe find the cause of your insomnia. The reason I'm asking because there are numerous causes for insomnia.
If you have a co-occuring anxiety problem this may be leading to worsening in insomnia. Sleeping tablets all have addictive/abuse potential so if one can prevent using them its first prize.
One thing to try is sleep hygiene: It is worthwhile reading up on this and implementing this.
If the problem persist and the anxiety is getting the best of you it will be best to consult a psychiatrist regarding the insomnia and anxiety
